My Favourite Cake (2024)

Saturday 29th March 17:00-21:30

St Simons Church, Waverley Rd, Southsea, Portsmouth, Southsea PO5 2PW

A cinematic dining experience with Kitchen of Hope.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of film, food, and culture at this Iranian-Themed Cinematic Dining Event. This unique gathering combines a screening of the award-winning Iranian film My Favourite Cake with an authentic Persian feast, live music, and immersive décor inspired by the beauty of Iranian gardens.

My Favourite Cake, described by The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw as a “wonderfully sweet and funny film” and a “compelling rebuke to… fatuous, clumsy repression,” tells the story of a 70-year-old woman embracing late-life romance in modern Iran. Tender, heartwarming, and richly textured, the film explores love, freedom, and self-discovery against the backdrop of an ever-changing society.

To complement this cinematic journey, guests will enjoy a carefully curated Persian menu prepared by Taarof chefs Soraya Hatami & Damon Hall, alongside talented Iranian cooks from Portsmouth City of Sanctuary’s Kitchen of Hope. Expect a feast of Kashk-e Bademjan, Persian jewelled rice, and Gheymeh, paired with saffron & rose iced tea and lime & mint cordial—all inspired by the film’s themes of warmth, nostalgia, and togetherness.

With live traditional Iranian music, a Nowruz-inspired welcome, and a setting designed to transport you into the world of the film, this is more than a meal—it’s an immersive celebration of Iranian culture and community.
