Film, Food, and Culture: How Making Waves Film Festival Brought Iran to Portsmouth

The Making Waves Film Festival has long been celebrated for its innovative approach to cinema, seamlessly blending film with immersive experiences that captivate audiences. This year, the festival outdid itself with “My Favourite Cake: An Iranian Dining Experience,” held on March 29 at St. Simon’s Church in Southsea. This event was a harmonious fusion of film, food, and culture, leaving attendees with an unforgettable taste of Iran’s rich heritage.

Upon entering St. Simon’s Church, guests were transported into a Persian paradise. The venue was transformed into a beautifully designed garden space, inspired by traditional Iranian aesthetics. The ambiance was further enriched by the traditional Nowruz table setting, symbolizing the Persian New Year, which added a layer of authenticity and festivity to the evening.

The centerpiece of the evening was the screening of the award-winning Iranian film, My Favourite Cake (2024). The film delicately narrates the story of seventy-year-old Mahin, who chooses to revive her love life after years of solitude. Its poignant exploration of aging and loneliness resonated deeply with the audience, eliciting both laughter and tears. The compelling performances and unique storyline captivated viewers, making it a standout feature of the festival.

Complementing the cinematic experience was an authentic Persian feast, meticulously prepared by talented Iranian cooks from Portsmouth City of Sanctuary’s Kitchen of Hope. Under the guidance of professional chefs Soraya Hatami and Damon Hall from Taarof in Worthing, the menu featured traditional dishes that tantalized the taste buds. From the rich flavors of Kashk-e Bademjan (aubergine dip) to the aromatic Persian jeweled rice and the hearty Gheymeh (split pea stew), each dish was a testament to Iran’s culinary prowess. Refreshing beverages like saffron & rose iced tea and lime & mint cordial provided the perfect accompaniment, enhancing the overall dining experience.

As guests savored their meals, the atmosphere was further enlivened by a live performance from a talented Iranian band. The melodic strains of traditional Persian music filled the air, creating an immersive cultural experience that transcended the boundaries of film and food. The synergy between the music, setting, and cuisine transported attendees straight to the heart of Iran, fostering a deep appreciation for its rich cultural tapestry.

Beyond the sensory delights, the event held a deeper significance. Serving as a fundraiser for Portsmouth City of Sanctuary, the evening aimed to foster community spirit and raise awareness for refugee inclusion. The collaboration between Making Waves Film Festival and Kitchen of Hope exemplified the power of cultural events to bridge communities and support meaningful causes.Attendees left not only with enriched palates and hearts but also with a heightened awareness of the importance of inclusivity and support for refugees.

Reflecting on the evening, it’s evident that “My Favourite Cake: An Iranian Dining Experience” was more than just an event; it was a celebration of culture, community, and cinema. The seamless integration of film, food, and music created a multisensory journey that resonated deeply with all who attended. It’s events like these that underscore the Making Waves Film Festival’s commitment to extending and redefining the cinema experience beyond the expected, leaving no audience behind and making cinema relevant to diverse and marginalized communities.

As the festival continues to push boundaries and create unique cinematic experiences, one can only anticipate what innovative events will grace Portsmouth in the future. For those fortunate enough to have attended this year’s Iranian dining experience, the memories will undoubtedly linger, much like the lingering notes of a beautiful Persian melody or the rich flavors of a well-spiced dish.

The film itself, The Secret of the Grain (2007), is set in the south of France and follows an Arabic family through the trials and tribulations of life, intimately denoting their relationships. And the thing that brings them together? A family meal and the homemade fish couscous from the mother of the family. The same fish couscous inspires ex-husband, Slimane, who had recently been made redundant, to open a restaurant to showcase this beloved couscous.

Couscous was the key that brought the evening together, being served to guests to enjoy while they watched the story unfold.

Secret of the Grain - Kitchen of HopeThe food was prepared by Kitchen of Hope, a project from Portsmouth City of Sanctuary that provides refugees the opportunity to cook dishes from their home countries. This charity-run kitchen cater for and brings a world of culture to events across Portsmouth a handful of times a month and at this experience, guests enjoyed a classic Arabic mezze salad, a lamb broth, a choice of fish, meat or vegetable couscous, and a delightful sweet couscous and fruit salad to finish the meal.

The real challenge for the chefs preparing a three-course meal for 50 guests, was to do so during Ramadan, a time of fasting from food and drink for those of Muslim faith. Attendees at the event were invited to join the chefs breaking their fast by eating dates at sundown, as is the tradition for the evening meal (Iftar).

The evening felt like a true celebration of culture at such an important time in the Islamic calendar, brought to life through the lens of a familial story. The cosy candle lit environment, the delicious food, and the high-quality screening (provided by Gosport Community Cinema) were a great combination for attendees to relax and feel taken care of.

The event was well supported and attended – Coastal Kitchen Family helped to supply the food and generously donated to the charity, alongside donations from attendees helping to ensure events like this can continue to be put on for the community, by the community.  We would also like to thank our sponsors BFI Film Audience Network and Film Hub South West for allowing us to put events like this on, and of course, Portsmouth City of Sanctuary and Kitchen of Hope for working with us on such a special event.

It goes without saying a huge thanks is needed to the chefs of Kitchen of Hope who chose the film and the menu as well as prepared and cooked it all. This event wouldn’t have been possible without you!

“The Secret of the Grain” (2007): A Must-Watch for Portsmouth

Have you ever watched a film that stayed with you long after the credits rolled? “The Secret of the Grain” is one such masterpiece that does just that, and I’m thrilled to share why it’s a must-watch for us in Portsmouth, especially right now.

Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche in 2007, this French drama dives deep into the heart of a North African immigrant family’s life in France. It’s a story that, while set in a specific community, unravels universal themes of family, ambition, and the unifying power of food, making it a poignant watch for anyone, anywhere.

Why “The Secret of the Grain” and Why Portsmouth?

    Cultural Mosaic

Portsmouth, our beloved port city, is a tapestry of cultures, each thread contributing to our vibrant community. This film, with its intimate portrayal of immigrant life and the struggle for cultural identity, mirrors the experiences of many in our city. It’s a conversation starter about diversity, integration, and the richness that different cultures bring to our collective table.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Slimane, the film’s protagonist, is laid off but doesn’t let this setback crush his spirit. Instead, he dreams big – of opening a couscous restaurant on a boat. In today’s economic climate, who can’t relate to the fear of losing a job or the dream of starting something new? Portsmouth has seen its share of ups and downs, and Slimane’s story is a testament to the resilience that defines us.

    The Language of Food

If there’s one thing that can bring people together, it’s food. “The Secret of the Grain” celebrates this idea, showing how Slimane’s dream revolves around a traditional dish that becomes a symbol of hope and unity. Portsmouth’s own food scene is a testament to how cuisine can bridge gaps between cultures, serving as a delicious reminder of our shared humanity.

The Complexity of Family and Community

This film doesn’t shy away from the messy, beautiful complexities of family life, something we can all relate to. It’s about support systems, generational gaps, and the ties that bind us. It’s a nod to our own communities in Portsmouth, where family and neighbours come together in times of need, celebrating victories and facing challenges as one.

    Chasing Dreams

At its core, “The Secret of the Grain” is about the courage to chase your dreams, no matter the odds. It’s a message that resonates with anyone who’s ever had a dream, especially in a city known for its entrepreneurial spirit like Portsmouth.

    Wrapping Up

“The Secret of the Grain” isn’t just a film; it’s a reflection of life’s complexities, joys, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. For us in Portsmouth, it’s a mirror to our own experiences, challenges, and the beauty of our diverse community.
